What Is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of interconnected muscles that form a supportive, hammock-like structure at the base of the pelvis.

Its functions include supporting the pelvic organs, helping regulate bladder and bowel function, contributing to sexual function and childbirth, and working together with the diaphragm and abdominal muscles to provide core stability and regulate intra-abdominal pressure.

When the pelvic floor is not functioning optimally, the muscles may be weak, overactive, or poorly coordinated. This can lead to symptoms such as urinary leakage, pain, feelings of heaviness, or discomfort during daily activities and exercise.

Why Is Individualized Therapy Important?

Pelvic floor dysfunction can have many different causes, which is why an individual assessment is essential before beginning treatment.

A specific exercise program may be helpful for one person while potentially worsening symptoms in another. Effective treatment requires understanding whether the muscles are weak or overly tense, whether their resting tone is appropriate, whether they can generate sufficient strength and speed, and how well they coordinate with other muscle groups.

What Does Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Involve?

The process begins with a detailed consultation during which we discuss your symptoms, medical history, any relevant test results, lifestyle factors, and personal goals.

Because the pelvic floor is part of a complex system, the therapist does not focus solely on one region. Assessment may include examination of different areas of the body that may contribute to your symptoms.

If indicated, and only with your explicit consent, a manual pelvic floor examination may be performed using gloved hands. This assessment helps evaluate muscle function, strength, tone, and coordination.

Every step of the process will be explained in advance, and you may stop or decline any part of the examination at any time. Internal examination is never mandatory. If you are not comfortable with this type of assessment, alternative examination options are available.

The Therapy Process

Based on the assessment findings, we develop an individualized exercise program that can be easily incorporated into daily life. You will learn proper muscle activation, coordinated movement patterns, and how to integrate breathing effectively into movement.

Exercises are regularly reviewed and adjusted during follow-up sessions to ensure continued progress.
